RESEARCH

Some of our main reseach areas are:

1. The dynamics and routes of the Oceanic Meridional Overturning Circulation, particularly in the Atlantic and in the Southern Ocean; Some of the questions we address are the partitioning of overturning circulation into boundary and internal pathways; the rate of deep ocean ventilation, and its mechanisms and controlls; Topographic constraints on the circulation routes; and remote sensing of the overturning circulation.

2. Boundary current instability and eddy shedding; and boundary current inertial separation.

3. Vortex dynamics, including topographical effects and cross-scale energy transfer.

4.  Dynamics of Density Currents (aka Gravity Currents), and of their interaction with Internal Gravity Waves.  This topic lies within a broader interest in outflow plumes.

5. Submesoscale fronts; their energy dissipation and their effects on air-sea interaction. This is the newest focus of the group.
